Probationary Police Officers
Once new officers are trained at the police academy the new officers are assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO). The new officer then undergoes an intensive 14 week Field Training program. Here they are assigned to a Field Training Officer that trains the new officer on police procedures and how to be the best Rolling Meadows Police Officer our city expects. The new officer is then on 18 months probation. Once the new officers pass probation he/she is then assigned to patrol and a 3-year process of in-service and academic training begins. This process allows them to advance into such positions as:

Job Details
Position Purpose:
- Performs the basic rudiments of police work such
as patrolling assigned areas in the prevention of crime, the enforcement
of state and city laws, ordinances and regulations, and the preservation
of order.
- Shall promote police/community partnerships to address the causes of criminal activity, community disorder, community fears and concerns, and any other community problem or issues.
Essential Position
Duties:
- Intervene in on-view criminal
activity and or acts of disorder.
- Initiate, develop, implement and follow through
with solutions to specific problems that are identified or brought to our
attention through the community via action plans;
- Encourage
citizens to participate in the problem solving process;
- Provide personalized and decentralized
police service to the neighborhoods;
- Develop
collaborative relationships among individuals, and organizations necessary
to jointly solve crime problems;
- Develop
and implement programs for public awareness of crime prevention methods
and public education.
- Educate
the citizens of the police role in the community;
- Adhere
to Department and City rules and regulations;
- Adhere
to uniform and grooming requirements;
- Ability
and willingness to work mandatory overtime when required;
- Respond
to radio dispatches;
- Investigate
reports of criminal activity; investigates suspicious persons/incidents;
- Prepare
written reports on incidents, crimes, accidents, arrests, and property
impounded;
- Provide
direction and information to the public;
- Issue
citations, warnings, or notice to appear for violations of laws and
ordinances;
- Make
arrests and serves warrants for violations of laws and ordinances;
- Direct
motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic; assists disabled motorists and
stranded pedestrians;

evidence and information for the investigation and prosecution of crimes;

the security of business establishments during closed hours;

to facilitate training programs or special programs;
- Conduct
business and residential crime prevention security programs which will
deter criminal activity;
- Initiate
and maintain programs in the youth area that will instill community
involvement activities in the preteen and teenage group;
- Attend
beat meetings, roll call and briefing sessions;
- Attend
department assigned training programs;
- Assist
in recruitment programs;
- Assist
in special programs such as the NRC and Citizens Police Academy;
- Responds
to Departmental correspondence via e-mail, voice mail or written
documentation;
- Discharge
any other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Requirements for
application listed in Chapter III of the Board of Fire and Police
Commission Rules. Also, successful
completion of the Board's examination and appointment from the certified
list, graduation from a State of Illinois recruit training school.
- Ability to complete all training requirements as assigned by the training officer.
Environmental Conditions:
Position Purpose:
- Assists
departmental personnel in the performance of their duties of a
non-hazardous nature in the area of report writing, animal control,
vehicle lock outs, parking enforcement, and traffic control. By handling the more time consuming,
routine tasks, it enables the Sworn Officer more time to concentrate on
the more complex aspects of Law Enforcement.
- Shall promote police/community
partnerships to address the causes of criminal activity, community
disorder, community fears and concerns, and any other community problem or
issues.
Essential Position Duties:
- Initiate, develop, implement and follow through
with solutions to specific problems that are identified or brought to our
attention through the community via action plans;
- Encourage citizens to participate in the
problem solving process;
- Provide personalized and decentralized
police service to the neighborhoods;
- Develop collaborative relationships among
individuals, and organizations necessary to jointly solve crime problems;
- Write non-hazardous
reports involving thefts, malicious mischief, property-damage-only motor
vehicle accidents, either on-station, public roadway, or private property;
- Prepare written reports;
- Investigate abandoned
autos and animal violations;
- Enforce parking
regulations and issues citations; enforce City business licenses;
- Assist in traffic
control; assist motorists in vehicle lock-outs;
- Receive reports and
complaints from public over telephone and at Police Information Desk, and
prepare any reports necessary;
- Pick up and/or trap
stray/wild animals, transports animal for disposition at end of
impoundment; make door-to-door contact with known or suspected animal
owners for animal licenses;
- Recover found bicycles
for impounding;
- Pick up daily mail
at Post Office as necessary;
deliver City documents;
- Check school crossing
guards and fill vacant post assignments, when required;
- Check security of
reported vacant homes and business establishments;
- Transports citations and
bond monies daily to Circuit Court Clerk's office;
- Relay motor vehicles back and forth from motor pool
for repairs;

Position Purpose:
Maintains departmental records through data entry into the Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) and the Police Department’s Records Management System (RMS); assists the public with information; provides front desk support; performs clerical duties associated with police records and the patrol division.
Assists departmental personnel in the performance of their duties of a non-hazardous nature in the area of report writing, animal control, parking enforcement, and traffic control. By handling the more time consuming, routine tasks, it enables the Community Service Officer and Sworn Officer more time to concentrate on the more complex aspects of Law Enforcement.

Essential Position Duties:
- Receives incoming complaints or requests for information from the public and either handles the situation or directs the citizen to the appropriate resource.
- Performs police front duties associated with supporting the patrol function.Monitors telephones and radio traffic.
- Operates a variety of office equipment to provide information to officers concerning driving and wanted statuses, criminal histories, vehicle queries, property queries and crime statistics.
- Enters and monitors warrants and other information pertinent to maintaining law enforcement networks and ensuring compliance with LEDS regulations.
- Sends, receives and disperses information via telephone, radio, or other accepted methods.
- Prepares, receives and processes a variety of law enforcement reports, citations and records in conformance with departmental policy.
- Maintains departmental files, records and office equipment.
- Types reports dictated by officers.
- Receives, processes and records monies associated with impounds of vehicles and dogs.
- Performs other clerical side work as assigned.

Competencies:

Ability to type 40 words per minute; successfully complete the LEDS general certification requirements; hear, understand and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; perform multiple tasks simultaneously
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or equivalent; at least 18 years of age; State of Illinois drivers license; successful completion of the Department's examination process.
Environmental Conditions:
Position Purpose:
- Escorts school children across streets or traffic intersections. Shall promote police/community partnerships to address the causes of community fears and concerns, and any other community problem or issues.
Essential Position Duties:
- Places and removes school crossing signs when necessary; stops traffic when necessary by displaying hand-held stop sign;
- Maintain order among children while waiting for proper time to cross children;
- Report license numbers of vehicles violating pedestrian's right-of-way to Police Department.

Competencies:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Physically capable of withstanding the elements on a continuing basis; adequate vision capabilities to carry out crossing guard responsibilities; able to provide own transportation to and from crossing assignments; pass a background investigation as may be requested by the Chief of Police.
